Viewing healthcare as a means of sharing in the healing work of God, students will explore the dignity
and destiny of the human person in light of illness and suffering. This will include the meaning of “person,”
concerns for justice in the medical profession, obligations to the poor, material and formal cooperation regarding
medical procedures, issues at the beginning and end of life, the role of conscience and the place of natural law.
The dignity of the health profession in Catholic teaching, the spiritual aids available to those who are ill and
the Christian understanding of sickness, suffering and death will be explored. This course is required for all
Healthcare majors.
