This course introduces students to the theory, application and practical art of reasoning and
persuasion. Students will study the nature of sound reasoning, the patterns of reasoning (both good and bad) the
use and abuse of language and how to evaluate arguments. Drawing upon a variety of resources, disciplines and
perspectives, students will be challenged to apply and hone the knowledge and skills they learn by analyzing,
critiquing, and defending their own points of view, as well as those found in advertising, news reports,
editorials, and excerpts from fiction and nonfiction literature.
