From the caves of Lascaux in France to the Crystal Cathedral in California, human beings have created
places, buildings, and landscapes for worship and religious ritual. In this course we will examine the
construction of sacred spaces across cultures and historical eras. The objectives will include a heightened
consciousness of the built environment and how it shapes the religious experience. Class presentations, a guest
lecture, and several visits to Bergen County and New York City houses of worship are included.
